I can’t imagine what the families of the 150+ murdered are going through right now. The only thing I can do is make my Facebook profile picture look like the French flag so they know the world is thinking about them. I’d encourage you to do the same.
I was thinking a similar attack couldn’t happen here in the U.S. because of the second amendment. A terrorist would immediately be shot by a citizen. But then I realized that in Florida, my concealed carry permit does not allow me to carry at public gatherings. Is this similar in other states? In light of this terrorist attack, I think we should reconsider that regulation on the Florida conceal carry permit. Anyone know the first step in making that happen? If the Patriot Act, in response to 9/11, allows the government to detain suspects indefinitely without trial, bypassing the sixth amendment, this terrorist event should justify a loosening of the regulation on gun control. I believe that brings us closer to the original ideals set forth by our founding fathers.
Next, instead of being overwhelmed by anger, sadness, or fear, I’m pondering a solution to preventing this type of attack from happening again. In order to find a solution, one needs to fully comprehend the problem. As of this writing, it appears that the terrorists are either French nationals with Syrian ties or Syrian nationals. It’s also speculated they are Muslim extremists. I’m sure the French government will figure out those details. But what seems to missing in most terrorist attack news coverage is the motivation. Why do the terrorists kill so many people and themselves? Is the reason as simple as us having different religious beliefs? What are those beliefs and why are they so important that they must kill for them? Maybe it’s assumed we already know, but I don’t.
